Our Binchotan: Tested and Guaranteed Radioactivity-Free

Since the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, many people have been concerned about the potential radioactivity of Binchotan.

The radioactivity of Orinko Binchotan is tested to guarantee you a product that is safe for your health.

In the interest of transparency, we share on this page the procedure followed to ensure that our activated charcoal is free from radioactivity.

Tests Conducted in Japan

Our Binchotan activated charcoal is made from Ubame oak wood grown in the Wakayama region. This region is located more than 700 km from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Therefore, it has not been exposed to high levels of radiation. Even though Japan experienced a nuclear incident, this does not mean that all wood grown in Japan is radioactive.

Each region of Japan has carried out monthly radioactivity measurements for the past 10 years. The Wakayama region (where our Binchotan is produced) has never been contaminated by radioactivity.

Tests Conducted in France to Confirm the Absence of Radioactivity in Binchotan

Although we have complete confidence in the rigorous tests carried out in Japan, we are also aware of the importance of transparency and trust toward you. For this reason, we decided to conduct an additional series of radioactivity tests on our Binchotan. These tests were performed by an independent laboratory recognized for its expertise in radioactivity analysis: Criiard.

The results of these analyses show a complete absence of radioactivity in the Binchotan. The tests do indicate the presence of potassium-40. This is a radionuclide that naturally occurs in the environment, including in our own bodies. It is found in foods such as seaweed and legumes, as well as in water and air. The levels of natural radiation caused by potassium-40 in our daily environment are very low. Consequently, the trace amounts of potassium-40 that may be detected in Binchotan activated charcoal are harmless to human health.
